One of two Sacraments of Healing
The Sacrament of Reconciliation, also called penance or confession, includes our expression of sorrow for our sins and a promise to God to do our best not to repeat these sins again. In the celebration of this sacrament, we acknowledge our sins before God (confess), we receive God’s forgiveness (absolution), and we perform an act of thanksgiving (penance) as directed by the priest to whom we confess. The grace we receive (reconciliation) from the sacrament heals us and helps us grow stronger in our faith, and our ability to live a Christ-centered life.
There are different forms of the Sacrament of Reconciliation but the most common is direct confession to a priest. You may sit opposite the priest (face-to-face) or speak through a screen to him in the confessional. One may celebrate the sacrament in church as it is offered weekly or you may arrange a time with the priest either in the church or in the priest’s office.
There is no limit to the number of times we can be forgiven for our sins! Catholics are encouraged to receive this sacrament at least once a year between the start of Lent and Pentecost. Catholics who have committed grave sin are especially urged to celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation and receive God’s forgiveness (healing) in their lives.
