In 2011, the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis merged five rural Catholic parishes (Saints Benedict, John the Evangelist, Joseph, Scholastica, and Wenceslaus,) in and around the City of New Prague into one parish. Today St. Wenceslaus Parish includes St. Wenceslaus Church and what we refer to as the Western Catholic Community of St. John the Evangelist in Union Hill and St. Scholastica in Heidelberg.
The Church of St. Benedict closed in January 2011 and The Church of St. Joseph closed in November 2008. The St. Joseph church building was sold and moved to the grounds of Pioneer Power in rural LeSueur County. All sacramental records for the fives parishes are kept on the St. Wenceslaus site.
The City of New Prague is a growing community located 45 miles southwest of Minneapolis and St. Paul. The population is approximately 7,500 which is a 60 percent increase over the past 10 years. New Prague has a unique location being 45 minutes southwest of the Twin Cities that allows convenient access to big city benefits with small-town charm. The Main Street of New Prague literally divides two counties; north of Main Street (Hwy 13/19) is Scott County; and on the south side is LeSueur County.
St. Wenceslaus Church, like the City of New Prague, was founded in 1856. This pioneer parish, which features the oldest Czech church in the state of Minnesota, grew as the town did and today stands as living testimony to the faith, dedication and hard work of those early Catholic Bavarian and Czech immigrants. St. Wenceslaus Catholic School opened its door in 1878 and continues the rich tradition of educating area children from preschool to grade eight.
