The Sacrament of the Eucharist

One of three Sacraments of Christian Initiation
 
We believe Jesus commanded us to repeat his actions and words at the Last Supper and from the beginning of church history, Catholics have been faithful to the Lord’s command. Catholics believe the Eucharist truly is the body and blood of Christ under the sacramental appearance of bread and wine. We refer to this as the “Real Presence” of Christ. This transformation is accomplished at the Liturgy of the Eucharist (Mass) by the priest through the power of the Holy Spirit. We do this weekly on the Lord’s Day in obedience to the command of Jesus at the Last Supper to “Do this in remembrance of me.” Catholics who have received their First Eucharist are encouraged to receive the Eucharist regularly.

Celebrating the Sacrament of the Eucharist for the first time

In the Archdiocese of Saint Paul and Minneapolis, the Sacrament of First Eucharist is administered when a child is in second grade. Preparation for this sacrament is required and begins in fall when the new school year begins.
